General Notes:
A New England colonist who left Connecticut for the Rhode Island colonies founded by Reverend Roger Williams. Williams, along with other left-wing Puritans moved to Rhode Island when they found the atmosphere of the New England colonies intolerant of religious freedom, particularly in their dealings with the Native Americans. Williams was admired by the Indians, whose language he studied, because he respected their individuality, protected them against land-hungry members of his race, and never tried to convert them unless they asked for it.
James married Hannah STANTON, daughter of Joseph STANTON and Hannah MEADE, about 1696 in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island. (Hannah STANTON was born in 1676 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut and died in Prob. Rhode Island.)
