Howard and his sister, Florence, were placed in a county home following the divorce of their parents. Shortly afterward, Florence was returned to her mother and her second husband, Leon Willets. Howard, however, remained in state custody, living with foster parents Martin and Mary Kerr until age 21. He was not reunited with his mother until 1947 at age 32. No explanation for this matter was ever given by his mother or siblings.

• Cause of death: Acute coronary occlusion, 14 Jun 1965, Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. Heart attack occured while Howard was at work at the Chevrolet Auto Plant, where he had worked for many years.
