8 (Nebraska). Surety: 4. William A. Shoemaker was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, April 28, 1817. When two years old he moved with his parents to Union County, Indiana where they resided for eight years, then moved to Pekin, Illinois, from whence, after a residence of six years they again transferred their residence to Carroll County, Illinois. He was married in 1839 to Miss Joanna Olds at Moscow, Iowa. He was the father of eleven children, three of whom survive him -- Mrs. J.P. Smith and Fred L. Shoemaker of Stromsburg and Mrs. C.L. Bell of El Paso, Texas. He enlisted at Lanark, Illinois, and served until the end of the war, taking active part in fifteen battles. He passed away after a lingering illness at the home of his son Fred L., southwest of Stromsburg, February 7, 1901. Mr. Shoemaker was one of the earliest settlers in Polk County, coming here in the spring of 1871, and was a continuous resident of the county until the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the United Brethern church Sunday forenoon at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Henry Snultz and the remains were interred in the Stromsburg cemetery.
