SAGE, James Madison 1 2 3 4 5
General Notes: "Madison was a school teacher and farmer, and he operated a grain elevator. He dropped his first name, James, and went by Madison Sage. He hated nicknames, so he named his two boys Lee and Dale, with no middle names. Lee and Dale were born on the same Nebraska farm, but the post office name changed from Abdal to Nelson. Madison farmed at Abdal in 1898. After Lee was old enough, Dale stayed with his mother and Madison and Lee "broke sod" -- farmed land that had never been plowed -- at a new farm nearby. However, in 1916, when Madison's wife, Roxana Lavina, died, Madison had to give up farming to take care of 5-year-old Dale. He started teaching school at nearby Rustin. Madison's youngest sister, Myrtle Sage, 16 years younger than Madison, moved in and raised Dale. He was likely named after his grandfather, James Madison Worden." James married Roxa Lavina HENDERSON, daughter of Samuel J. HENDERSON and Mary E. CAMPBELL, on 1 May 1898 in prob. Nebraska. (Roxa Lavina HENDERSON was born on 19 Jul 1874 in Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois, died on 9 Mar 1916 in Nelson, Nuckolls County, Nebraska and was buried in Mar 1916 in Nelson Cemetery, Nelson, Nuckolls County, Nebraska.) |
