PLANTAGENET, Geoffrey "The Fair" Count of Anjou (1113-1151) |
PLANTAGENET, Geoffrey "The Fair" Count of Anjou
General Notes: Also known as William V, or The Fair. When Geoffrey's father, Fulk V, set off for Jerusalem on crusade in 1129, he handed the rule of his counties of Anjou, Touraine and Maine to his son. After the death of his father-in-law, King Henry I, Geoffrey began the conquest of Normandy by right of his wife, Matilda, completed in 1144 when he took Rouen. The nickname Plantagenet sometimes used for Geoffrey only became a name for the entire dynasty in later years, and was not used by his immediate descendants, the first appearance of Plantagenet as a surname being in the fifteenth century. Geoffrey was succeeded by his son, Henry, who became king of England as Henry II in 1154 and began the Plantagenet dynasty of English kings. Geoffrey had a relationship with Unknown CONCUBINE. (Unknown CONCUBINE was born about 1120 in England.) Geoffrey next married Empress Matilda Countess of Anjou on 17 Jun 1128 in Le Mans, France. (Empress Matilda Countess of Anjou was born in Feb 1101 in England, died on 10 Sep 1167 in Rouen, France and was buried in Sep 1167 in Cathedral de Rouen, Rouen, France.) |
