bullet  General Notes:

After emmigrating to California, John and Ordelia settled in Elk Grove, near Sacramento. After Ordelia's death, John ran a jitney service in Stockton, CA:

"Mrs. Strong's father, John Shoemaker, ran a fleet of horse-drawn buses many years ago, serving patrons of Stockton's leading hotels."

bullet  Research Notes:

Appear on the 1860 US Census, living in Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin with their two children. Also listed in the household is Angeline WHITAKER (b. 1843, KY; d. UK), probably a cousin or younger sister of Ordelia. There is a marriage record for Angeline MANCHESTER dated 16 Mar 1856 in Grant County, Wisconsin. It is possible Angeline's husband had passed away shortly after the marriage, or was away from home at the time of the 1860 census. The marriage record for Ordelia has her name misspelled MANCHASTA.

Sources

1 1850 US Census (Eastern District, Grant County, Wisconsin). Repository: Ancestry. Surety: 4. Lists Nathan Shoemaker (age 47, b. NY), wife Margaret [O'Cayne] (age 46, b. Ireland) and children John J. (age 20, b. IN), Wm. D. (age 18, b. IN), Martha J. (age 15, b. IL), Elnathan (age 13, b. IL), Michael J. (age 11, b. IL), Theodore P. (age 8, b. IL), and F.M. [Franklin] (male, age 6, b. WI), living in Grant County, Wisconsin. Also in the household is Michael Kelley (age 20, b. Ireland), listed as a "laborer," whose relationship, if any, is unclear. Nathan is listed as a "farmer."

2 Strong Family Bible (Owned by descendants of Nathan Shoemaker.) Surety: 3. Nathan Shoemaker, Margaret O'Cayne, Samuel-Donner Party, John James, Jerome Herbert. The reason for the reference in this text to the famous Samuel-Donner Party (wherein a large party of emigrants perished at what is now known as Donner Pass) is unknown at this time. A Samuel Shoemaker from Ohio was part of the Samuel-Donner Party, and perished at Alder Creek, but his possible connection to Nathan Shoemaker's family is unknown. The identity of Jerome Herbert is uncertain...perhaps a son [maybe even a twin to John James, as twins did run in this family] who perished in infancy.

3 1880 US Census (Stockton, San Joaquin County, California). Repository: Ancestry. Surety: 4. Lists J.J. [John J.] Shoemaker (age 49, b. WI), wife Elean [Rebecca McCutchan] (age 36, b. IL), and children Emmie [Jones] (age 13, b. CA), Annie [Jones] (age 11, b. CA), Ava [Jones] (age 7, b. CA), Ida F. [Jones] (age 4, b. CA) and A.A. [Arthur] (age 5 mos, b. CA), living in Stockton, California. John is listed as a "hack driver," and indicates that his father was born in Indiana. Mother's birthplace not listed. Elean indicates that her father was born in Virginia. Her mother's birthplace is not listed. Info on this record may have been provided by Elean, as John's birthplace is erroneous. The birthplace of the father of all the children is listed as Wisconsin, and the birthplace of their mother is listed as Illinois. All of the children except Arthur are Rebecca's from her first marriage, and are erroneously listed as John's children, so the birthplace of their father may also be erroneous.

4 1860 US Census (Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin). Repository: Ancestry. Surety: 4. Lists John Shoemaker (age 30, b. IN), wife Ordelia [Manchester] (age 35, b. WI), and children Florence J. (age 2, b. WI), and Laura (age 1, b. WI), living in Fennimore, Wisconsin. Son, Lernon, does not appear, and may be deceased. Also in the household is Angeline Whittaker (age 16, b. KY), who is likely a sister of Ordelia's. [Wisconsin records indicate a marriage for Angeline Manchester.] John is listed as a "farmer."

5 1900 US Census (District 108, Stockton Ward 1, San Joaquin County, California). Repository: Ancestry. Surety: 3. Lists John James Shoemaker [as J.J., with no other info and notation "unable to locate"], living in Stockton, California. John is living alone in a large rooming house owned by a George Newell from New York.
